I love The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It's just the best. All the characters were brilliantly written and portrayed, but I must admit to loving grumpy, hard-drinking, soft-hearted Lou Grant the most. Every time I watch the series from beginning to end I wind up in smitten-kittensville by the time Lou's divorce arc comes along. Seeing this tough, old-fashioned guy hurt, vulnerable, and struggling with sudden bachelorhood breaks my heart.
I hate Edie Grant! Who could dump that sweet, lovely, faithful man just because oh woe, I've been married for so long and I never learned how to be just me first, by myself....and other '70s Carly Simon song lyrics. Blergh. Can't you go back to school and get a job without unceremoniously ditching your husband of 30 years and the father of your children? Her arguments for leaving him always sounded like selfish baloney to me. Yeah, I take it a little too personally when Lou gets dumped, and bawl watching him sit there so crushed yet strong at Edie's second wedding. Lou Grant can take it. ::sob:: I love a show that can make me laugh and cry at the same time. They just don't make them like this anymore, which is why I spend most weeknights watching the MeTV lineup instead of anything current.
Also, I ship Lou and Mary, I can't help it. They're adorable together.
During the early years of the series the friendship between Mary and Rhoda was the highlight, but to me Lou and Mary's growing personal and professional camaraderie is the best part of the later seasons. I know the show decided not to "go there" romantically and painted their attempt to go on a date in the final season as totally awkward and wrong, but I don't know. I still think they would've made a cute and oddly compatible couple.
Mary: I didn't think I was asking for that much, but I haven't met anyone who even comes close. Someone who doesn't care how I look, because he's more concerned with who I am. Somebody strong and intelligent, who respects me. Who I can respect. Who has gentleness in him. I guess there just aren't any men like that.
Georgette: Sure there are. You know one.
Mary: Well if I do, I sure wish you'd point him out.
Georgette: Lou Grant.
Mary: Come on!
Georgette: He has every quality you said you wanted, and I'll throw in one of my own. He's cute as a button.
Yep, that's about the size of it, Georgette. Lou is a catch. *g*
